"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go" Dr. Seuss
"Everything you need for a better future and success has already been written. And guess what? All you have to do is go to the library."Henri Frederic Amiel
"Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become." C. S. Lewis
Students and staff had a big celebration for Dr. Seuss' 107th birthday. In addition to a door decorating contest and curricular activities, students who dressed as a character in one of his books, had the opportunity to participate in a "Seuss" parade.

The Uglified Ducky: A Maynard Moose Tale by Willy Claflin
Storyteller Clafin resets the Andersen fairy tale in Alaska's Northern Piney Woods and retells it in "Moose Words" and Piney Woods English, complete with glossary and parental warning. His protagonist is a baby moose who, taking a nap in a duck's nest, is accepted by the Mommy Ducky as one of her duck children, albeit a "distremely uglified" one. As she tries to teach her duckies to waddle, quack and swim, she becomes so annoyed with the moose's failures that she takes him to Dr. Quack, who does his best to "fix" him up, in vain. When fall arrives and the ducks learn to fly, our moose, very depressed, goes off into the forest. It is only when he meets some "beautiful beasties" who tell him he is really a moose like them that he is filled with joy. End pages depicting a dark forest floor with dry brown leaves and several large gray rocks make a suitable stage for Stimson's slick gouache paintings. There's "cuteness" in the duck family and an immediate appeal in the depiction of the young moose with his big, broad, "moosey-esque" nose. The moral of the tale is clear. A CD of the story is included.
